DAY 3 : Masai Mara

Set in the heart of Africa’s Great Plains in Kenya, the Masai Mara boasts 1,672 sq. kilometers of unspoilt wilderness. It offers the best game and bird-viewing not only in Kenya, but anywhere in Africa. The views across the rolling golden grasslands studded with acacia trees, rivers and forests are dazzling, the sense of space overwhelming. Throughout the year the Masai Mara is a place of natural drama, a kaleidoscope of colour and life. Most stunning of all are the months between July and October, when the savannah teems with animals during the Great Wildebeest Migration. Millions of wildebeest gather in the Masai Mara in one of the natural wonders of the world.

There have been some 95 species of mammals, amphibians and reptiles and over 400 birds species recorded on the reserve. Nowhere in Africa is wildlife more abundant, and it is for this reason a visitor hardly misses to see the big five (buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion, and rhino). Other game include hippopotami, cheetah, Grant’s gazelle, impala, topi, Coke’s hartebeest, giraffe, Roan antelope and the nocturnal bat-eared fox. However wildebeest are by far the dominant inhabitants of the Masai Mara.

Their numbers are estimated in the millions. The Great Migration starts in July each year when well over one million wildebeest along with large numbers of Thompson’s Gazelle, zebra and other herbivores migrate from the Serengeti plains in Tanzania to fresh pastures in the north and then back south again in October.

You will enjoy a full day's game drive safari returning to your camp for dinner and overnight.

DAY 4 : Lake Elmenteita - Lake Naivasha

Lake Elmenteita in Kenya's Great Rift Valley is a havens for birds and wildlife alike and is an important breeding site for many threatened bird species.Located between lakes Naivasha and Nakuru, Lake Elmenteita is one of the most important of the lakes of the Great Rift Valley in Kenya, as it is the breeding and feeding ground for many threatened bird species. The area was declared a Ramsar site in 2005.

During the dry season, black lava islands provide the only suitable nesting and breeding grounds for the Great White Pelican in the Rift Valley region.

Due to the small size of the lake, fluctuations of water level affect the salinity of the lake and therefore the conditions alter, making it an unstable place for the flamingoes to rely on for food supplies. However, the lake is a paradise for bird lovers as it has over 450 species, including migratory birds.

Famous activities in Lake Elmenteita include birdwatching, swimming in the Kekopey hot springs, nature walks around the shoreline, and safaris.

Named for the intense geothermal activity within its boundaries, the Hell's Gate National Park is a remarkable quarter of the Great Rift Valley. Spectacular scenery including the towering cliffs, water-gouged gorges, stark rock towers, scrub clad volcanoes and belching plumes of geothermal steam make it one of the most atmospheric Parks in Africa. Hell’s Gate is an ideal venue for a day trip from Nairobi where, in addition to the bio-diversity that includes raptors, visitors can enjoy mountain biking, rock climbing and a natural spa.

Night at Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp

DAY 5 : Lake Elmenteita - Ol Pejeta Conservancy

This morning we depart Lake Elmenteita and proceed north, driving through lush tea and coffee estates to Sweetwaters Tented Camp located in Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Sweetwaters land, the Ol Pejeta Conservancy and its sumptuous ranch were once the private domain of famed multi-millionaire, Adnan Kashoggi.

Upon arrival we visit the Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a charming haven established by the Jane Goodall Institute to provide sanctuary to orphaned chimps, and the specially protected and fenced refuge of black rhino with its stunning forty specimens! In fact Sweetwaters boasts excellent game viewing with the highest ratio of game to area of any park or reserve in Kenya.

Moreover, the camp has its own private waterhole and salt lick so we’ll be guaranteed unprecedented close encounters. Whether its day or night game drives, camel trekking, lion tracking, al fresco dining or relaxing by pool, Sweetwaters is bound to delight.

Night at Sweet Waters Serena Camp

DAY 6 : Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Today we explore exotic Sweetwaters Sanctuary on two extensive game runs. Our camp also overlooks one of the busiest waterhole's in the area and offers elephant, giraffe and myriad plains game.

The Laikipia region has the richest diversity of wildlife in Kenya outside of the Maasai Mara – and protected areas like Ol Pejeta are key to conserving this natural wonder. The Big Five is fully represented: lion, Cape buffalo, African elephant, leopard and black and white rhinoceros thrive here. There are also over 300 bird species on the Conservancy.

This is Africa as Teddy Roosevelt saw it years ago when he led one of the first safaris to tour Africa in comfort and splendor. Our tents at Sweetwaters will remind us of this bygone era.
